The Design Response
A canyon-based layout generates natural shade and cooler microclimates across the site. The visitor journey was shaped using neuroarchitecture principles — a sequence of discovery that draws people through the space and deepens their connection to the animals. Oasis-like zones bring people, animals, and landscape into a shared, unhurried experience.
The Outcome
Prevention on heat exposure for animals and visitors alike. Movement through the site became intuitive and enjoyable. The design feels like it belongs to its environment — a place that invites people to slow down, look closer, and stay longer.
The Animal Brief
Desert environments are among the most demanding settings for animal care and visitor experience. Heat, glare, and open exposure cause stress for animals and discomfort for people. Good design doesn’t fight the climate — it works with it.
The Challenge
The site faced extreme temperatures, limited natural vegetation, and intense sun exposure throughout the day. The design needed to protect animals and visitors from the heat while feeling rooted in the local landscape and identity — not imposed upon it.
