Fennec Fox Habitat

United Arab Emirates

The Design Response

A rock-based landscape creates zones for climbing, observation, and rest. A den system modelled on natural burrow conditions offers a cooler, sheltered retreat. A water feature supports microclimate quality and adds a sensory layer to the animal’s environment.

The Outcome

A genuinely species-appropriate home — not a decorative feature. The animal moves between zones on its own terms. The owner has clear access, and staff can operate the space without disrupting the animal’s routine.

The Animal Brief

Fennec foxes are built for the desert — but that doesn’t mean any desert environment will do. They are sensitive to stress, reliant on specific microclimates, and need spaces that reflect how they naturally move, rest, and hide.

The Challenge

A private residential project in an extreme desert climate with limited space. The design had to meet the animal’s needs while remaining practical for the owner and safe for staff — all within a constrained footprint.
